
Karen L. Vincent, MA CCIA
Karen L. Vincent practiced as a Crime Analyst and managed
the Crime Analysis Unit at Hayward Police Department, Hayward, California
for over five years. She has over a decade of GIS and graphics software experience
in policing, research and economic development. Karen has additional experience
with software and database development, criminal justice information systems,
and web development.
Karen has an A.B. in Psychology from Augustana
College in Rock Island, IL and an M.A. in Administration of Justice with
a focus on Criminal Justice Research from the Center for the Study of Crime,
Delinquency and Corrections at Southern
Illinois University, Carbondale, IL. While at SIUC, Karen assisted with
a National Institute of Justice grant, mapping patterns of violence in Charlotte,
North Carolina. She used Idrisi, MapInfo and ArcView with SPSS for the spatial
analysis and developed a computerized animation for the raster images using
the Corel Graphics suite. Her GIS and graphics work was featured on the NBC
Nightly News. While working as a crime analyst, she obtained her California
certification and served as Treasurer and President of her regional professional
association (BACIAA).
Her specialties include: GIS, graphic design, web development,
database applications, and statistical analysis. Her work is published in

edited by D. Weisburd and T. McEwen, 1997, the Winter 2000 issue of Crime
Mapping News (Volume 2, Issue 1), published by the Police Foundation,
and in Geographic Information System: An Introduction, edited by Ravi Kumar
Jain B and Pragati Saxena, 2007. She has presented papers on ArcExplorer and
using Photoshop with GIS at the International
Crime Mapping Research Conferences in 2000 and 2002, and she has trained
GIS at the California
Crime and Intelligence Analysts Association's 2002 Training Conference.
She was invited to speak on School Mapping at the Regional Conference for
the National Crime Prevention Council in September 2004 and on GIS for Anti-terrorism
and the Protection of Assets at the October Meeting of the New York Metro
Chapter of Infragard. Her work on GIS and the protection of assets has achieved
international attention.
Karen has been training criminal justice technology, software, statistics and research methods for Curiosity Quest since 2000.
