GIS: A Beginning Course for
Crime Analysis - ArcGIS 8/9
This course is designed to provide the basics of operating ArcGIS 8 or 9. The six main sections include: ArcGIS Anatomy, Map Data, Settings, X,Y Coordinates, Geococding and the Layout View. We will cover basic use of ArcMap, ArcCatalog and ArcToolbox. Students will be introduced to the software using law enforcement examples.
Students will be asked prior to class which version they currently have and the class will handle the differences between 8 and 9.
Topics: working within ArcCatalog, metadata, displaying geographic data, creating maps in ArcMap, tables, the natural order of layers, properties, map/distance units, coordinate systems(basics), colors, bringing in x,y data, finding x,y points, basic geocoding to streets and parcels, geocoding properties, interpreting unmatched addresses, layout elements, templates and custom layouts.
Tuition: Tuition for this course is $395 and must be paid in advance to secure a place in the class. Tuition includes instruction, materials and a $50 nonrefundable data processing fee.
Requirements: The student is not required to have experience with ArcGIS. Each student should bring a pencil or pen to assist with the workbook exercises.
